horatio hornblower series on A&E

Have you ever watched Horatio Hornblower? I may have. Once, or twice. It’s actually a whole series of DVD’s, so I have an excuse. I didn’t understand all the hubbub a few years ago when my friends were swooning over the T.V. series on A&E; but. Well. I‘ve seen the light. Horatio is noble, honest, and full of integrity. Also? He’s not hard to look at while he’s swasbuckles and kills pirates. I’ve also heard, via my many hours spent…

Disney’s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad

If you’re looking for a Halloween flick that’s not super scary, we are rather fond of this oldie, narrated by Bing Crosby–one of my favorite old-school crooners. It’s animated, it’s short, and a great introduction to the Legend of Sleepy Hollow as written by Washington Irving. Note: The book is a great read this time of year, for older kids and grown ups. On the same disc is The Adventures of Mr. Toad, of Wind in the Willows fame. My…

witches night out.

(it’s part of her dress, not a bra, in case you were wondering) Just when I was thinking halloween is only for the kids, some girlfriends threw together a last minute ladies-only gig, costumes required. Some were completely bewitching in head to to witch costumes with glittery eyelashes and face paint to boot, some of us just wore embellished hats. One even wore her prom dress. (Are we disgusted it still fits 3 kids later? Yes.) We had a blast…

Baby Signs DVD Giveaway!

I’m a big believer in teaching babies sign language. I saw it work with my nephew and knew that I’d like to do the same with Little O. The idea that he can actually let me know what he wants and why he’s upset before he can use words sounds great to me! But I’m also attached to the “no screen time before 2 years” idea. (I’ve made it 6 months so far. Ask me in a year how I’m…

memorial day movie pick: band of brothers.

Several years ago Victor and I spent a slew of Winter nights making our way through the epic miniseries Band of Brothers. It’s a breathtakingly realistic portrayal of the true story of Easy Company, “506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. Drawn from interviews with survivors of Easy Company, as well as soldiers’ journals and letters, BAND OF BROTHERS chronicles the experiences of these young men who knew extraordinary bravery and extraordinary fear.” I’m watching the series on…

twilight movie review.

I’ve been a Twilight fan from the beginning, through controversy and all, {and by the way enjoying them doesn’t make me any less of an intellectual, I take issue with that} and I love the whole series, even {gasp, sigh!} Breaking Dawn. I was one of those crazy people who went with a group of girlfriends last night to the Midnight showing of the movie adaptation of Twilight. I’m not going to give anything away for those of you who…
