Before you know it, the school bell will be ringing once more. Or perhaps you are counting down the days, hours and minutes. To help ease back into the school-year, here’s a sampling of recommended reading for your grade-schoolers, courtesy of my resident education expert. Recommended why? Research has indicated that students in the top 10% of reading achievement read these books most often. Highlights from the list, by grade level.
1st Grade:
If You Give a Pig a Pancake, Laura Numeroff
Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak
The Snowy Day, Ezra Jack Keats
2nd Grade
Corduroy, Don Freeman
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Judi Barrett
Miss Nelson is Missing!, Harry G. Allard, Jr.
3rd Grade
Charolotte’s Web, E. B. White
Ramona Quimby, Age 8, Beverly Cleary
Frindle, Andrew Clements
4th Grade
A Series of Unfortunate Events, Lemony Snicket
The Harry Potter series #1-4, J.K. Rowling
*** These books are suggestions, based on research and test scores. If you want the complete list and statistical information, just ask. Really, anything that excites or interests your child is valid fodder. If they are interested, they’ll read, and reading is a great great thing!
