The Grandkids’ Room

Right now Mike, Little O, and I are on vacation in Maryland, visiting my parents. We have also had the privilege of spending time with my very special Mary Moo. Mary Moo is my aunt and when I was growing up, she was the only aunt that I saw on a regular basis because my mom’s siblings all lived in the United States (I grew up in Canada). We never called her Aunt Mary—always Mary Moo and I even remember being confused when my little girlfriend was referring to her aunt. I told her, “You don’t say aunt. You say Mary Moo.”

Well, Mary Moo is more than an aunt these days. She’s a grandma now, and as a grandma she has set up a pretty magical children’s room in her house. I wanted to share some pictures with you. I would say that Mary Moo’s style is traditional with lots of European influences. She recently moved back home after living in the Netherlands for several years and you can certainly find lots of fun international items in this room!

(Please forgive the photography—I only had my iPhone and the pictures were taken after dark.)

I can remember playing with this lamp when I was a little girl sleeping over at my grandma’s house. There are three sections of the lamp that light up separately, depending on how many times you turn the switch. I loved sleeping beside this lamp!

This is a picture of my grandma as a girl. I love that this is a part of the children’s room so that they can learn about and remember those who came before them.

Mary Moo has set up two twin beds, each with its own little group of stuffed toys. So cute!

This is a book that Mary Moo sent us for baby O. She has a few copies of it and only the most loved friends and family receive a copy as a baby gift! The great thing about this book is that there are no words. The whole story is told with beautiful illustrations, and I am telling you, I actually cried when I “read” it. I was pregnant at the time, but I probably will cry the next time I flip through its pages, too. It’s a beautiful story.

Unlike the last book, the best part of the Dikkie Dik books are the words! These books are written in Dutch and a lot of the fun in reading them is reading a language that you don’t speak!

Along this shelf are lots of books and lots of little treasures. There is a stuffed horse on the chest that Mary Moo had as a girl and that I remember playing with when I would sleep over at Mary Moo’s house.

And here at the door to the room are two little greeters that I assume Mary Moo probably bought in the Netherlands, too!

It really is a great room with lots of fun things to keep grandkids busy! Makes me wish that we lived closer so that Little O could come visit his Mary Moo’s house a little more often.
