the essentials for a stylist’s kit

— This is a re-posting of an article from last Summer’s archives.  While I’m away in Europe I thought I’d give you a tour of my blog.  I’ve got years of content to delve into and plenty of fun content to keep you entertained while I’m away. —

For the Park City photo shoot I’m styling {yesterday and today}, I needed a stylist’s kit. An odd assortment of pieces every stylist needs to make sure an outfit looks put together for a photo shoot, movie shoot, or red carpet.

I needed one for real life anyway, but it was really fun to put one together for the photo shoot. I put it into a Caboodle makeup kit and now that I’ve assembled it, I’m going back to the store to buy one for my own make-up. This thing is off the hook. It opens into 3 tiers on each side with a large main area for bigger items.

Hopefully I’ll be using it a lot this year and in years to come.

Here are the essentials for a stylist’s kit:

  • scotch tape
  • straight pins
  • bobby pins
  • safety pins
  • Black Sharpie markers
  • scissors
  • lint roller
  • seam ripper
  • paper clip bindings
  • hang tags
  • Zip Lock bags big and small
  • garbage bag
  • static cling sheets
  • hand warmers
  • pincushion
  • Scotch double stick tape
  • gaffe tape
  • shoe mittens
  • rubber bands
  • disposable hangers
  • clothes pins
  • Altoids
  • gum
  • glue dots
  • Velcro dots
  • Tide stain stick

I also have a rolling rack and a clothes steamer traveling with me.

That’s not including the 7 huge plastic bins filled to the brim with clothes, each tagged and labeled along with a photo collage of what each outfit entails. I also used my Avery white plain sticky labels from my organizing kit to slap labels on the plastic bins so I know what belongs to whom.

You know what else isn’t included in the picture? My clipboard with the call sheet for the photo shoot with all the critical details. What time I show up, which model is being shot at what time, where, etc. I also have a detailed list for each model with their sizes, and the specific pieces, sizes, brands of each outfit.

Don’t make fun. I enjoy being organized. Makes me feel in control and whatnot.

This whole day in the life of a stylist is no joke, there’s a serious amount of work and paraphernalia attached to the gig.

Ooh that’s the case I use for makeup :) wouldn’t it be fun to share pics of our makeup cases?

I can’t believe it. I expected to see, like, buttons and stuff. Scotch tape??
