You know how last summer we road tripped down the coast of California and blogged about it? Next Summer the goal is Eastern Europe. I know, right?
Viktor is {obviously} a foreigner. He’s been back to Warsaw since he left as a kid but I have yet to visit the motherland, and I figure next Summer is as good a time as any.
Most of Viktor’s family still lives in Poland. In fact, this is the view out his auntie’s window in downtown Warsaw. Not too shabby.

These are my in-laws; they would really love to show my children their original stomping grounds before they don’t have any stomp left.
And I would really love to see Old Warsawa. I mean, look at those cobblestone streets.
And this run-of-the mill Polish cathedral. *sigh*
Besides, where else outside of Prague can you go to a public bath and see such spectacular sights?
Eastern Europe or Bust
{coming to Petit Elefant Summer 2010}.
GAH!! My eyes! That last picture is seared onto my mind's eye now, thankyouverymuch. =)
Seriously? You'll love it. I haven't been to Warsaw, but I visited Krakow, Karlovy Vary & Prague & have wonderful memories. Visited Auschwitz & Birkenau on the same trip, and I'm so glad I did. It was staggering & unsettling, and touched my heart in a way that words can't describe.
So glad you're going!! Will count on lots of fabulous pics! (But NOT of the public baths, please!)
Holy Coincidence, Batman! We are entertaining the possibility of visiting Warsaw next summer for several weeks, while my husband teaches a course at the university. Your pictures are putting me over the edge. I must go. (And if you go, we could meet up and eat Polish dogs together!)
PsychMamma,
ha ha ha. I know, it's awful isn't it?
viktor won't step foot in the camps, but i'm planning to take the kids.
bella utahan,
Italy is on my list, I want to swing in from the East and hit the coast across from Bosnia.
And, I think the public baths will do wonders for my self confidence!
Oh please do! I've always wanted to go to Europe. Since there aren't any plan in the near future to go, I'll just live vicariously through yoU! :)
Tiffany,
Get. Out. We must meat up for some Brats and Kielbasa. PLEASE!
Camille,
And I'll post photos of the scary Hostels all along the way…. :)
bwah ha ha ha–Victor in 30 years? you must go. you must go. you. must. go. because I can't.
It is funny because I was thinking you needed a trip to Poland. I have been and it is wonderful, but all of Europe is wonderful. I didn't have a chance to go to Auschwitz, but have been to Dauchau. It is amazing the spirit of darkness still lingers over the spot 60 plus years later. Everyone should plan a trip to Europe even with children. To often I hear people say to me that I am so lucky because I get to travel. I think the difference between me and others is that I make it happen. You can to. You ever need tips let me know I would be happy to help.
KJ,
Probably. You're looking at my future.
likeschocolate,
it's really true. it's not that i have any more money than other people, just a whole lot of gumption.
i'll surely be emailing you with desperate questions!
I want to go! My grandfather's family is originally from that area, but emigrated in the early 1900s. Of course, my mother's family is from Japan. I want to go there, too!
Great idea! I too am married to a European, actually we live in Italy- but a few years ago we visited Eastern Europe- I loved it! Enjoy your trip!
PS I did not do the baths in Prague, but have been to many in Europe, it is a eye opening experience that taught me ANYONE and I mean ANYONE gets away with wearing as little or nothing at all in those places!
naomi,
it will definitely help that we have family still living in warsaw. my family is from denmark but that's a long shot because it goes back a few generations.
frankly, i'd just like to see the WHOLE world so i'll just do it in bite size pieces.
LOL – that bottom picture!
What an adventure, how fun!
I too am a wife of a European…
Bosnia that is. I know that he would love to go back, and how I would love to get to see something other then USA. Good luck with your mission… I'm JEALOUS! :)
That is fantastic! Color me jealous. I spent 3 weeks in Poland when I was in high school and absolutely adored it! The pictures of Warsaw were like, the only thing I ever actually finished scrapbooking. :)
Kami,
The public baths will go a long way towards me feeling awesome about my body!
Miranda,
That's awesome! I've only seen pictures as well and I figure it's about time for us to go visit the real deal, cannot wait.
KB,
Bosnia is actually on my list of places to see, I hear it's beautiful.
Ohhh, you lulled us into complacency with those benign early photos and then, holey-moley, that beats anything I've seen at the public pool! Yikes!
But seriously, what an exciting opportunity! I just perused the entries from your California trip and I look forward to reading about your experiences in Europe. Makes me want to blog about my own travel experiences…
Have fun planning and packing!
~K
