Summer Switcheroo

So this is a little late in happening, but let me tell you what I did this weekend.

I gave my living room an instant face lift for summer. How, you ask? Pillows!

When Mike and I got our beautiful yellow couch, it was the summer. It seemed so bright and cheery in our home. (Before we got married, Mike had done an excellent job of decorating the home we live in, but there was a lack of vibrant color, so I [over]compensated with this couch!) I went to Pier 1 Imports and found a table runner that I loved and that matched our couch, so I cut it up and sewed throw pillows with the fabric.

Then I saw some great Thomas Paul pillows on sale. They were bright green with a graphic print on them. So I bought them. And things were so bright and so cheery, and it was wonderful.

Until October.

And suddenly I was asking myself what the heck a bright yellow couch with bright floral pillows was doing in my home!

I realized the easiest way to tone down and “winterize” the couch would be to recover the pillows. So I got some great (and super inexpensive but high quality) fabric from Ikea (oh, how I love you!). The fabric was a dark charcoal gray with very deep mustard accents that tied into the couch perfectly and successfully winterized my living room.

To tell the truth, I procrastinated making the pillow covers, and I will cite pregnancy and lots of work as my excuses. But when my mom came to town to help with the baby, she asked for a list of projects to do while staying in our home and I assigned her pillow covers.

Voila! Instant face lift! Suddenly I had a very nice winter-looking living room.

And this weekend, it was FINALLY time to do the reverse face lift and switch pillow covers. My room looks bright and cheery and summery again!

I would say that the total project cost about $40ish in fabric, but that’s only because I have a lot of pillows hidden in every corner of my living room. For the average pillow user, a project like this might only cost $20ish, but it can instantly summerize or winterize your space!

    Momfluential,

My husband is an artist and loves, loves, loves Jewish culture. So this is his portrait of a Jewish man. The empty frame beside it is for another portrait, but he’s working on that right now.
