THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNER, JAMIE, COMMENT #6

maui jim sunglasses

Wow it’s snowy out in my neck of the woods.  Snowy, cold and very, very wintery.  I’d give anything to be on a beach somewhere but since I’m not, I’m going to enjoy the weather I have and burrow in for the winter.  Instead of dreaming of surfing somewhere (I wouldn’t dare!) I’m going to light a fire tonight.  We’re going to have soup for dinner and hot tea afterwards in front of the fireplace while I nestle in with a good book.

Do you have certain books you read and movies you watch when it’s cold outside?  I tend to watch almost exclusively BBC shows once we’ve packed up Fall and head into December: Sherlock (OBVS), Pride + Prejudice (Colin Firth version, of course), Upstairs Downstairs, you name it.  As long as there’s a BBC stamp in the corner I’m usually game.  I end up using words like ‘posh’ and ‘marvelous’ and phrases like ‘ that’s rather daring’ and ‘we mustn’t!’.  I wish I were joking, but I can totally understand why Madonna and good old Gwennie end up sounding like such fakes.  Listening to your favorite posh Brits (you know who you are BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH) makes one positively swim in propriety.

I don’t even want to help myself.

I’m feeling rather mahhhvelous about the snow today (ask me how I feel come March) and want to share a bit of that happiness with you.  You might notice I’m sporting some fabulous sunglasses today, sunglasses from Maui Jim, a once tiny little company started on the beaches of, you guessed it, Maui.  Sun and water sports require a special kind of sunglasses lens to keep a girl from crashing straight into the coral reef, and over the years Maui Jim has those polarized lenses down to a perfectly patented PolarizedPlus® science.  That science helped me drive through the snowy streets today, highlighting all the trouble spots on the roads with special polarization, helping me look rather sassy in the process.  I can’t wait to wear these on the ski slopes!

Why should you care about these sunglasses?  Because not only do I love my dashing new sunglasses, I’d like to “share the wow” and give a pair away to one of you.

snowy days ahead and wow

Tough question — I don’t have a good “best gift” story, just lots of good enough ones! Cute clothing always tops my list!

  2. Bree Tinch :

My husband always does a good job. He remember me saying things that I don’t even remember

  3. ~j. :

There are a couple of best gifts I’ve ever received, but what comes to mind right now is when my friend (who later became my brother’s wife) made me a wedding video. I had been married for 5 years, had had 3 kids, and without me knowing, my (now) sister-in-law snuck photos from my albums, scanned them, and made a video for me, which is something I had wished I had done for my own wedding. Presh.

  4. girlfromwva :

I think the best gift I ever received would have to be a Speidel I.D.Bracelet my Dad had made for me when I was in 6th grade. My name is not common so there aren’t things already made with it on it. (a necklace my bf had made with my name on it that he gave me last year is also a best gift ever!)

  5. Jolene S :

The best gift I ever got was a carriage ride! A horse-drawn carriage pulled up in front of our house and we proceeded to drive through town to our favorite restaurant. It was like being in another time; best gift ever!

  6. Jamie M. :

My favorite gift ever was a handmade one from my daughter. She made an ornament with her handprint on it when she was 2. She painted it and told me it was so colorful because it looked like LOVE!! It’s beautiful and hangs on my tree every year.

  7. Joy :

When my husband and I were first married and didn’t have much money we set a $15 limit for our gifts for each other. My husband found a way to barter and trade for a kitchenaid mixer knowing that I love to cook more than anything.

  8. cara heinly :

Best gift ever??? Hmmmmm, toughie. Maybe the one that’s next to me right now and used nearly every single day since we received it. My college roommate made an awesome quilt for my husband and I for our wedding. It is on the couch and used all the time. Love it.

  9. Crystal :

Best gift was a video my friends/housemates made of their favorite memories with me set to my favorite song. It makes me smile to watch it every time.

  10. Julia :

We usually do Christmas wish lists, but one year my husband surprised me with fabulous silky pajamas! Now they are a Christmas Eve tradition! :)

  11. Liesel :

For a milestone birthday, my husband secretly contacted tons of my family members, friends, and coworkers and asked them to write up a memory they had with me or something they admired about me. He also collected pictures from each individual. He then put everything in a beautiful scrapbook. I can only imagine all the hours that went into creating the gift-both from my husband and from all the people who participated. I cherish it.

  12. Amanda :

My Christmas present this year will probably top my list: I get to meet my sister for the first time!

  13. Stacia :

One Christmas my husband came up with an elaborate scavenger hunt with cute handmade cards. I can’t remember the gift it led to, but the packaging was fantastic!

  14. BreAnnne Mansell :

My birthday is on Christmas day so my husband goes out of his way to make sure my birthday gifts are amazing. One year I woke up to find the painting I had been crushing on for months from a local gallery. I still love it almost a decade later :)

I would also be very happy to find these hot sunglasses under the tree or in a birthday box!

  15. Mindy :

Two years ago, I opened the best Christmas gift – an engagement ring hidden inside a Starbucks tumbler that said, “Let’s merry!” :)

  16. Lindsey MacMurray :

Five years ago I had a 24 day old little boy on Christmas. That was a truly magical year.

  17. Corrin :

Incidentally, the best gift I ever received is a pair of sunglasses! My sister can always pick out the best sunglasses for my face, even though we live 2000 miles away from each other.

  18. Zhaleh :

Probably the Polly Pocket Playhouse I received in 2nd grade. We had just made wishes in class on wishbones and mine came true!

  19. Talina :

A few years ago my boyfriend bought me a pendant that he had seen me looking at earlier in the year. I cried, he’s not the best at picking out gifts but when he gets it right, he really gets it right!!!
    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  20. Peggy :

My favorite gifts are all the Christmas ornaments that my four sons made for me every year in school. They may not be the most perfect or the most beautiful but they mean the world to me.

  21. courtneymomof5 :

I don’t partake in the celebration…but the best gift I’ve gotten was my Anniversary 7yrs ago. My hubby bought me a bright red Kitchen Aid and I love it. I use it at least 3-4 times a week. My third child was also born right on my Anniversary and I don’t think I could top that! Thanks for the giveaway…stay warm, its a balmy 75° here in New Orleans!

  22. Honora :

The most touching and heartwarming gift I ever received was a surprise birthday party! My best friend showed up on my doorstep at 11:00PM waking me up. My boss had already given me the week off to spend with my BFF. All without me even knowing a thing. The best!

  23. Sherri :

My husband taking me to the airport to “watch the people” and seeing my daughter from across the country walking toward us…surprise!!

  24. Renee :

One year my mom snuck my kids and my precious English Mastiff to a photographer. Had shots done of the 3 of them for me. I literally was in tears. Best gift ever..

  25. Cherie :

After my grandpa died, my mom took a bag of his favorite clothes, cut them into squares, sewed them together and made me a blanket out of them. It’s my favorite present I’ve ever received and probably my favorite thing I have.

  26. Jaclyn Reynolds :

My best gift ever where a bunch of my favorite CDs for the car.

  27. Katie :

Tough question. I’ve definitely recieved a lot of cute clothing over the years!

  28. Alicia :

My almost 17 year old son!!

  29. Aubrey Archuleta :

    A painting from my father.

  30. Margaret :

My favorite gifts have been the thoughtful surprises — like the hardbound set of the Oxford English Dictionary I got a few years back. Still touched by that one. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  31. Alex :

My favorite gift was a “Super Nintendo” I got it when I was 10 years old It is favorite because I remember how excited I was when I ripped open the wrapping paper and it just brings back memories of how much fun being a kid was

  32. adrienne :

The best gift I ever received was a whole box of knitting needles and yarn that my mother purchased off an old woman from Craigslist. The old woman was so excited to be selling her beloved knitting possessions to a young knitter to carry on the craft.

  33. Sara :

My husband already had 2 degrees when I met him, while I was still trying to finish my bachelor’s. He aways joked that I could have a college-logo mug when I finally graduated. Well, on the day of my graduation years later he had a lovely one wrapped up for me and it was the best gift ever :)

  34. Leigh Anne :

Best gift hands down…. First pair of skis and then closely followed by the countless hours driving to mountains every weekend to ski. It is such a part of who I am now, who would have thought that 35 years ago?

  35. Clare Tea :

The best gift I ever received was a huge, warm one piece animal pajama! Its so great for winter, and i’m still wearing it right now!

  36. Kim Shope :

The best gift I ever received was a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses from Petit Elefant…… Oh wait there goes my wishful thinking kicking in again :) Last year for my birthday I was given a puppy and she’s turned into my everything!
