how to decorate a homemade gift bag

— This is a re-posting of an article from last Summer’s archives.  While I’m away in Europe I thought I’d give you a tour of my blog.  I’ve got years of content to delve into and plenty of fun content to keep you entertained while I’m away. —

Who wants to make a homemade gift bag today? I do, I do! Seriously, the economy is terrible & you can save a few dollars making this darling gift bag yourself; you probably have what it takes to make this in your house right this second.

Supplies for a homemade gift bag:

  • Scrapbook paper
  • Brown lunch sack
  • Scrapbook brads

Step 1:

Rip several pieces of scrapbook paper into little jagged edge circles. You’re making flowers out of paper and the circles are the petals, so the sizes you rip is totally up to you. My biggest circle was about 2″ in diameter.

Step 2:

Rip as many circles as you’d like layers of the flower. Lay them out on top of each other until you’re happy with what you have.

Step 3:

Grab a scrapbooking brad and poke it through the middle of all the layers of the ripped paper, one piece at a time.

Like so.

Step 4:

Attach the flower to the brown paper bag wherever you’d like, willy nilly.

Attach as many flowers as you please. Three was my lucky number for this gift bag. I also chose to keep the color of the flowers monochromatic but it would be fun to use a bunch of different patterns and colors of scrapbook paper.

Step 5: {Totally Optional}

I sewed the top of the bag closed with a present inside, just for kicks and giggles. I think it gives it an extra homemade look. I literally just sewed the top closed, no frills.

Did you even know you can sew on paper? You can, and it’s cute and super easy.

That’s it! Your very own handmade gift bag in less than 10 minutes, using only 3 supplies.

Can you handle the cute?

Make it yourself and let me know how it works out! I’m thinking for bigger presents I’ll use a big brown paper grocery bag, covering up the store logo with large flowers overlapping each other.

Have fun making your own.
