freestyle world cup aerials in park city, utah.

Friday night we took the kids up to Deer Valley ski resort to see the Freestyle World Cup Aerials {ski jumping to laypeople like me}. Some of the athletes were qualifying for the Olympics, which is all kinds of awesome. And I have to say, seeing ski jumping in person is a whole different game than watching it on ESPN.

This is what it looked like from my vantage point. And although I wish I had some of those globe lights in my backyard for late night BBQ’s, they were quite the eyesore when taking photos.

What you don’t see are the actual jumps. See where it says 5, 4, 3, 2, & 1? There are really, really steep jumps on the other side of them. By the time we saw the skiers they were already airborne.

I had to play with the lighting so you could actually see the guy on skis, and the photos look like they’re really poor quality as a result.

But look! He’s doing flips in the air! On skis!

And he’s almost landed, almost. He’s looking down to the crushed up pine boughs {seriously, they put chopped up pine boughs on the snow so the skiers can see where they need to land} to see if he’s almost done.

And…… he landed it. A couple of guys had yard sales halfway down, it was really painful to watch. A yard sale, in ski language, means your stuff goes flying everywhere. You bailed, crashed: had a yard sale. Skiers are funny people.

Precocious had a good time even though she complained about being cold the entire time. Well, most of the time. It was about 9 p.m. on the slopes of Deer Valley, and it was cold.

Charming made the most of it, sledding down the mountain on his bum. He was a good little rocket, propelling himself a good 30 feet at a time down the slopes, knocking down ski bunnies in his wake; it was totally amusing to watch.

At least it was amusing for me. Precocious is always a little horrified at Charming’s behavior in public; she doesn’t realize he’s keeping her life interesting, fun, full of flavor.

But that’s what moms are for, to remind you:

life could always be worse.

Allison, looks like so much fun! This Southern California girl got to see athletes training for the Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, last summer at the Olympic ski jump arena. So cool! My husband and I got to stand at an overlook platform about 20 feet above them- the funny thing is, their view was of the Alps and a GIANT cemetery below! Crazy! Good luck at your summit tomorrow!
