First Aid for Children

Last week, family friends almost lost their little boy to drowning. When they pulled him out of the water he wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse. They had just started CPR when a neighbor saw what was going on and rushed over to help. She told the family that they were administering CPR incorrectly because the boy was under five, and she took over. They were able to get the boy breathing again and they rushed him to the hospital. He’s now out of the hospital and back to being an active little boy.

What impressed me about this neighbor was how prepared she was. Her grandchildren come to visit her at her cabin every year, so she takes a CPR refresher course every year. If not for her preparation, my friends might have lost their son.

Even before this happened, I was recently thinking that I have forgotten all the First Aid that I learned when I was in high school. I think that I could successfully perform the Heimlich maneuver on an adult, but that’s about it. My friends’ close call has motivated me to sign up for a First Aid course. They’re pretty easy to find in your area. My parents are doing the same out in Maryland. I found a New Parents First Aid course that I think will be perfect for Mike and me. If you think that your First Aid skills are a little rusty, maybe now is the time to look into taking a course yourself. You never know whose life you’ll be able to impact.
