Encouraging natural passions in kids

cute purple scarf

As a parent, I watched eagerly from the start of my two children’s lives, to see what it is my kids would be passionate about. Would I have skateboarders on my hands? Future thespians? Maybe a lacrosse or baseball player? What about a budding artist or writer? With both children I came out swinging: for my daughter I bought baby books, and started reading to hear the day the pregnancy test came back positive. I signed her up for toddler…

say hello to someone you love

Hallmark card

Recently I had the chance to sit down and write a handful of notes to some friends I love.  It’s not that rare of an occurrence for me, telling people how much I love and adore them.  I’m the girl who runs up to people at conferences to profess my undying love.  I email people on a regular basis just to say “hello, I adore you”.  So it was a natural thing for me to sit down, pen in hand,…

A good playground is hard to find

rope swing

If you were to ask my children to recount a favorite story about Europe, or to pick the best thing about any one of the amazing cities we visited, they wouldn’t tell you about ancient cathedrals or moats left by the invasion of the Turks. No, they don’t care so much about those.  What they will tell you about is the most amazing onslaught of playgrounds since the beginning of mankind. Giant 60-foot metal slides, zip-lines, merry-go-rounds, rope swings, giant…

Ingredients for a happy summer

blowing bubbles

Last week I went to the gym for a couple hours {stop the presses!} and came home to a contented, totally decked out Charming.  Precocious had a friend over, and between the two of them they glittered, pony tailed, gelled, and hair sprayed Charming to within an inch of his life. He loved it, obviously. I found him on the driveway, bubbles in hand, enjoying a pretty summer night like only a small child can. Even though I had a…

A new baby horse

colt

Our horse Reuben got a new playmate a few weeks ago.  One of the mares in the group of naughty mountain horses he hangs with had a baby. He’s possibly the cutest creature mother earth has ever seen.  His name is Rooster. I’m not in charge of the names, trust me. We missed his birth by 15 minutes, which was a little heartbreaking.  We were waiting for a call night or day to be there when Sage delivered, but horses…

Holiday weekend

4th of July

I may have mentioned {a time or three} that the 4th of July is my favorite holiday of the year.  This weekend did nothing to dispel my bubbly feelings about the holiday. Our weekend went something like this: pool, BBQ, late night fireworks, sleep in late, pool, parade, BBQ, fireworks, sleep in late. My sister and her family came over for some holiday festivity, in which our husbands had giggly discourse over the state of the world. These two are…

How To Walk Ten Thousand Steps A Day

watch

Some time ago, someone from on high recommended walking ten thousand steps a day for optimal health and wealth.  Minus the wealth part.  When it was recommended, I was probably taking well over ten thousand steps a day so I sort of ignored it, as one does to advice that doesn’t apply, and went on my merry way. And then I started a blog. I’ve become so sedentary over the last few years, tap, tap, tapping away on my computer,…

summer’s out: bags for kids

— This is a re-posting of an article from last Summer’s archives.  While I’m away in Europe I thought I’d give you a tour of my blog.  I’ve got years of content to delve into and plenty of fun content to keep you entertained while I’m away. — This year on the last day of school for my kids, I surprised them with bags filled to the brim with summer fun.
