Top Readers

Before you know it, the school bell will be ringing once more. Or perhaps you are counting down the days, hours and minutes. To help ease back into the school-year, here’s a sampling of recommended reading for your grade-schoolers, courtesy of my resident education expert. Recommended why? Research has indicated that students in the top 10% of reading achievement read these books most often. Highlights from the list, by grade level. 1st Grade: If You Give a Pig a Pancake,…

Have you happened upon All Modern Baby yet? Allow me to introduce you. Oodles of fun, wonderful things for babies and kids in one spot. From wooden toys (you know me, you really know me) to ride-on toys to nursery bedding by all the big names, I could spend hours perusing their online boutique. Discovery Gateway

We took a quick jaunt down to Salt Lake City recently. We didn’t have lots of time, but we did squeeze in visit to the Discovery Gateway and I’m so glad. Everything is hands-on and ultra kid-friendly. It’s a great way to get some relief from the heat with plenty to keep your little ones (toddlers and grade-schoolers) occupied. There are several exhibits in the museum ranging from waterworks to film-making, but even the lobby is engaging, with wheels and…

allyzaba blankets.

My kids are fighting to the death over our ‘family’ Allyzabba blanket {called the MegaZabba}. Plush fabric on the front & silky smooth on the back makes the perfect sensory experience for your little ones. Those little nubs on the fabric make for hours of self soothing, and who doesn’t need a little of that once in a while? I’m not raising my hand, but I should. Allyzabba Aloha$24.95{small} I’m partial to the Aloha but you can choose whichever style…

flash cards for kids.

flashcards

If you’re in the market for flashcards to beef up the letter skills of your little brainiac, I recommend Flashcard Zoo. Created by a mama who’s clearly done her research, the cards are: “Mommy-created and kid-tested and approved. These flashcards have been lab tested in hostile conditions and can withstand, chewing, drooling, being walked on, being used a Frisbee, landing in the toilet, swimming in the bathtub and are great for keeping wooden train tracks level on the carpet.“ Boy…

diaper rash cream that works

I have two babies with sensitive skin, and I’ve gone through plenty of skin care products and diaper creams trying to find those that are effective yet mild, and that treat as well as prevent problems. Bonus points for natural, organic, and pleasant-smelling. Because babies just shouldn’t smell like medicine. Thus, I was delighted to discover Mayron’s Good Baby. Developed by mommy and Emmy-winning actress Melanie Mayron (of the hit TV shows “Lipstick Jungle,” and“thirtysomething.” ) and her father, a chemist, Good…

quote about motherhood.

I think I’ve posted this quote before, but it bears repeating. At least for me. Especially today. “I’d rather be a mother than anyone on earth bringing up a child or two of unpretentious birth I’d rather tuck a little child all safe and sound in bed than twain a chain of diamonds about my {carefree} head I’d rather wash a smudgy face with round, bright, baby eyes than paint the pageantry of fame or walk among the wise” Meredith…
