Baby Signs DVD Giveaway!

I’m a big believer in teaching babies sign language. I saw it work with my nephew and knew that I’d like to do the same with Little O. The idea that he can actually let me know what he wants and why he’s upset before he can use words sounds great to me! But I’m also attached to the “no screen time before 2 years” idea. (I’ve made it 6 months so far. Ask me in a year how I’m doing. And then ask me with my second child how I’m doing.) So I wanted a way to start teaching Little O sign language without plunking him down in front of the TV.

Enter “Baby Signs,” a cute pop-up book that covers 15 basic signs that will help me communicate with Little O! In each page spread, an adorable illustration comes to life. In addition to the main pop-up image, the pages feature several “pull tab” interactions that demonstrate how to do the sign. I think that my favorite feature of the book is a mini poster that has all the signs in one place. It’s like my cheat sheet to remind me what’s what. I do wish that it came with more guidance about what ages this works best with, or tips on sharing the book with baby, but I’m sure I’ll manage. I’m just the type of person who scours the diapers box for instructions on how to properly change a diaper. (Not there, by the way, because apparently I’m the only human being on the planet who didn’t naturally just know exactly how to do it.)

Right now we’re working on “No” because my mom says it’s better to introduce limitations at 6 months than at 2 years. I’m also incorporating “more” during meal time and “all done” when he obviously is full. I’m excited to watch for signs of when he really starts getting it!

Are you at this stage, too, or do you know someone who is? Five lucky readers can win a copy of this book, and one grand prize winner will even receive a $50 gift certificate to Babies “R” Us!

not entering the drawing, but I will say that we used some signs with our first and it was great. No. More. All done. Song. Sleep. It's cute that though he's almost 3 and highly verbal, he still makes the sign for "more" rather absent-mindedly. We started around 7-8 months with a couple of signs and added more over time.

  2. Kalli Ko :

well sign us up (oh hahahaha I'm so funny…)

I've been trying to teach my son a few signs but could probably use some more direction.

Sit was another favorite with my daughter. The kids still know it so when we're at storytime and they start running around like freaks I can sign 'sit' to them with a real mean face. I totally want that gift certificate.

  5. Jill :

did the signing thing with my first, then got lazy with number two. would love to win and start working with him!

    fingers crossed!

  6. Jennie :

I've used a few signs with my son. He's very verbal, so he's learning words faster than I can teach him the signs. I'd really like to learn more, though, so count me in! :)

  7. Emily :

We did this with my two youngest brothers. They are 12 and 9 now. It was really neat. I for sure plan to do Baby Signs with my someday kids.

I hear deaf babies can sign as early as five months, would love to win (my baby is five months…i'd like to test the waters!)

  20. Heather :

I used signs with my second and third and I loved them. My son was slower to start using the signs I was teaching him (around 13-14 months old) and I had started around 10 months so I almost gave up for a while there but I was so glad I didn't because he was also less verbal than my girls and I know it helped reduce his frustrations when it came to communicating. Now I have another little boy (6 months old) so I'd love this book to read with him.

  21. Mary :

What a great giveaway! I have a son with a speech delay (who is doing much better now after intensive therapy) and it would have been great to teach him sign language as a baby/toddler to cut down on his frustration level. I'm expecting a baby next month and I would love to teach her sign language!
