how to display hotel keys

I’ve been traveling a lot over the last few years, and somewhere along the way I decided to start collecting my hotel room keys.  I have some pretty great ones, really clever ones.

The Joie de Vivre hotels do a really good job making appropriately themed keys, they’re kind of my favorite.

I’ve been thinking of a bunch of different ways to display these, but I need some ideas from my smart readers.

I’m thinking I’ll get an old window, from a barn or something and frame some foam core.  I’ll put C cup hooks into the foam, nicely spaced.  Then I want to drill holes in the hotel keys and hang them from the hooks, old school style.

What do you think?  Am I crazy?  Do you have any other awesome ideas to display my collection of hotel keys?

I need your helpI’m counting on you.

I love that idea! I think it’ll look great. And if you keep getting more, you can double some up. OR, you could just throw some antique keys in there, too, for an old-meets-new juxtaposition.

  2. Kami :

Very cool! This would look great in your office!

love it! I think that it will look awesome!

Cool idea. You could also hang them on twine or Ikea tension rods by tying them or pinning them on. Or, you could make a really cool mobile or lampshade by connecting them.

Jealous! Fun collection and I agree with Kami. Hang it in your office. Also, you could be way lazier and just use double stick tape to mount them straight on the wall in a grid, line, or starburst pattern. Make sure to share the “after”.

Oh wow! What a great idea!!! So bummed I haven’t saved my keys cuz we’ve traveled a lot the past few years too. I’ll never let another one go! You could make collages in smaller frames so that you can keep adding more frames with keys to your wall.

I’ve been thinking of doing this same thing w/my tickets/keys to Disney World. They are almost all the exact same but the sheer volume is just kinda cool. I think I saw Starbucks do a wreath with their Christmas giftcards. That would be fun.

What a great idea! I just found one floating in the bottom of my purse from my last trip. Sadly I don’t get to travel much but I think if I did I would make something :)

I just love this! Both the collecting of the keys and your display idea. It reminds me of my college professor who used to cut up credit cards and embroider the pieces onto felt–gorgeous.

I can’t wait to see how the keys look hanging together.

You could arrange them so cloud/blue ones are on top, landscape/tree ones off to side and beach/wave/pool ones together. Kind of like one big picture.

I’ve always hated throwing out my hotel key cards, but eventually would do so because I didn’t know what to do with them. Now I do! Great idea on hanging them! I think it will be a great conversation starter and a neat way to remember all of the places you have been.

hole punch and jump rings. Make a wall hanging. Or a NECKLACE : )

This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time: you could make an outdoor tiki bar and incorporate them by having them laid out on the bar top counter positioned in random angles then pour hard resin over them so you’ll have them forever. Maybe throw in some antique hotel keys for a now & then feel. Old & new travel post cards from hotel/motels. A travel conversation piece while sipping on a cocktail! I could go on with ideas but I’ll stop for now ;)

do you have to PAY to keep your hotel keys?? i’ve not done much travel but always assumed you just give them back so they can re-use them???????? i’m going overseas at the end of the year and they would be cool souveneirs if it’s acceptable to just keep them!
