For the Park City photo shoot I’m styling {yesterday and today}, I needed a stylist’s kit. An odd assortment of pieces every stylist needs to make sure an outfit looks put together for a photo shoot, movie shoot, or red carpet.
I needed one for real life anyway, but it was really fun to put one together for the photo shoot. I put it into a Caboodle makeup kit and now that I’ve assembled it, I’m going back to the store to buy one for my own make-up. This thing is off the hook. It opens into 3 tiers on each side with a large main area for bigger items.
Hopefully I’ll be using it a lot this year and in years to come.
Here are the essentials for a stylist’s kit:

- sewing kit
- scotch tape
- straight pins
- bobby pins
- safety pins
- Black Sharpie markers
- scissors
- lint roller
- seam ripper
- paper clip bindings
- hang tags
- Zip Lock bags big and small
- garbage bag
- static cling sheets
- hand warmers
- pincushion
- Scotch double stick tape
- gaffe tape
- shoe mittens
- rubber bands
- disposable hangers
- clothes pins
- Altoids
- gum
- glue dots
- Velcro dots
- Tide stain stick
- measuring tape
- pen
- Moleskin notebook
- tampons
- Kleenex
- First Aid Kit
- wet wipes

I also have a rolling rack and a clothes steamer traveling with me.
That’s not including the 7 huge plastic bins filled to the brim with clothes, each tagged and labeled along with a photo collage of what each outfit entails. I also used my Avery white plain sticky labels from my organizing kit to slap labels on the plastic bins so I know what belongs to whom.

You know what else isn’t included in the picture? My clipboard with the call sheet for the photo shoot with all the critical details. What time I show up, which model is being shot at what time, where, etc. I also have a detailed list for each model with their sizes, and the specific pieces, sizes, brands of each outfit.
Don’t make fun. I enjoy being organized. Makes me feel in control and whatnot.
This whole day in the life of a stylist is no joke, there’s a serious amount of work and paraphernalia attached to the gig.
I read through your list and was hoping you could do a post listing what each item in your kit is used for??? Some of the items it was easy for me to figure out but some of them I am curious what you use them for….I am always needing style help!
Some of the stuff isn’t so self-explanatory, like the glue dots. Things like that hold back errant belts, etc. Elastic bands do the same thing. There are a lot of multiple use items in there too!
I’m sitting here reading about your kit and your call sheet with all your detailed information and I’m thinking, “yes, yes, that’s exactly what she’d need…” and then I get to your admonition of “Don’t make fun.” And who would dare? Organization is no laughing matter. Organization makes my world go round. Your list made my heart skip a beat. You are awesome.
Ha. Well, I’m glad you didn’t laugh, my family thought it was overkill but it ended up being JUST what I needed!
When I read the word caboodle I was like, oh no! But then I saw it was classy looking and not pink with that marbley swirling. Oh how times have changed.
Mine was peach. I shudder at the memory.
Allison, PEACH? Peach? Really. Wow. Um. {tilts head to the side}. Well, whatever floated your boat I suppose.
{shudder}
Seriously, when I looked at the tag and saw that it was Caboodle I thought, “well, I guess it isn’t the 80’s anymore”. The construction is marvelous, my sister still has hers from 1989.
Impressive! I wish I was as organized…
It’s okay, I’m a little compulsive about it, which probably isn’t super healthy either.
:)
I love me some organization. :)
BTW, I linked to your blog from my blog yesterday, loved the brush tutorial. :)
Thank you! I wish I’d known about some of those brushes a million years ago, it’s good to know some of that stuff…..
Did I miss a lint roller??
You did. There’s one hiding in the main area on the bottom.
Wow! I need you to come style me everyday. Make me look photo ready at any moment!! :)
Well, that or you could just hang with me and I’ll make you look photo ready.
You have to get topstick. It’s magic!

Good grief, I do. Thanks Kage!
