Braincandy is an engaging, fun, and award winning series of DVDs created by husband and wife team Sam-Reich Dangen & John Dagnen as an alternative way to teach their twins about the world. The catchy theme song will drag you in, and the fun segments about the senses will keep your kids completely entertained while they learn. I highly recommend them.

this makes me think of “animaniacs” and their brain song. All I can hear right now is “Brain Stem! Brain Stem! Medulla Oblongotta!)

Wow! I forgot all about that song. Do they incorporate parietal and temporal lobe lyrics or do they stop at hypothalamus?

The Braincandy DVD series is really unigue in that it presents a most ideal platform in which all young children learn, “the 5 Senses.” Less about the senses themselves and more about the learning these DVDs engage children on a very different level than the kind of rote learning they might get from flashcards.

Here’s the quickie Braincandy explanation: Children start developing a sense of “self” as early as 15 months when they look into a mirror. They soon begin learning their body parts esp the sense parts. So when they see already familiar “sense parts” up on the screen they are suddenly engaged in a more natural, organic way (think sense of control) that thats opens new doors to connect/interpret their world. Hence, laying the groundwork for stimulating that critical thinking potential. So underneath the loveable “sense part” characters, the real kid/experiential activities and the smart music and sound design this DVD series main purpose is to get little brains to start constructing meaning behind the things they experience… which just happens to be all things learned through the “5 Senses.” I love to talk about this stuff and that’s probably why i can’t resist the opportunity to share.

By the way you may find the “brain stem” in the Bruce Brain character but there is no Medulla Oblongotta…sorry!
