how to liquid eyeliner

I wish someone had taken me by the hand and taught me how to apply liquid eyeliner.  Although that someone would have had to have found me at the ripe old age of 12, because that’s when I started really getting crazy with makeup.

I don’t approve.

Anyway, here’s a quick video tutorial on applying liquid eyeliner.  It’s way easier than you think, especially when you draw a template first like I do.

I love your video how-tos! You’d think a 27-year-old would know how to correctly apply make-up but I’m always saying, “Oh, THAT’S how you do it!” while on your site.

    Thanks for the tips!

    • Allison :

You know what? A LOT of women don’t know how to do it, so you’re not alone! I hope it helped.

  2. Emily W. :

Ok, for some reason I only do eyeliner on the bottom and sometimes halfway on the top (outside in). What are your thoughts on this? Like why don’t you line the bottom of you eye?

    Thanks!

    • Allison :

I do line the bottom of my eye, just not with liquid, and usually not at the same time. It makes my {and possibly your} eyes WAY too small.

      I’m not a huge fan of the halfway look. I just had a discussion with a makeup artist about it, and she feels the same. Weird look. { I did it in college, so you’re not alone}

  3. Marisa :

I love your tips, too. I always learn something!

I’m too worried about future wrinkles to pull my eyelid for daily liner application. I just make do without the pull most days, and save the pull for special occasions or if I know I’ll be having my photo taken. Any thoughts on this?

    • Allison :

You can do a gentle pull, with less than your full force, but I’m less worried about wrinkles than I am about the improper application of my eyeliner!

Seriously, I don’t care too much.

  4. Suzanne :

Thanks!! I have never been one to wear make-up. But to be honest – I am not sure how to apply it to look good and what kinds to buy!! I can’t spend too much either.

I think I might just have to try this!!

    • Allison :

It’s so easy Suzanne, and it looks so good.

  5. Katie :

Love it! I wore liquid eyeliner (not very well applied) today and every time I looked in the mirror I thought, there must be a better way to apply this! Thank you so much!! Also, what color is your nail polish? So bright and spring-y. Love your tutorials!

    • Allison :

I’m sure you did a great job applying it! It really is easy though, once you get the hang of it.

My nail polish is O.P.I. dim sum plum. Love it.

  6. Lana :

love all your how -tos – i have yet to venture into liquid eyeliner territory, but just might have to now!

by the way… LOVING your lip colour in this vid. Do tell….

    Thanks!

    • Allison :

Lana, it’s some MAC shimmer lipstick with some Stila lip-gloss on top.

  7. Sue :

I do my liner a bit differently. I don’t put pencil liner underneath and instead draw a line approximating how high I want my liner to go on my eyelid. Then I fill it in underneath with smaller diagonal strokes, making sure I get into the lash line. If I end up with the top being uneven or something, I do something really weird. I lick the tip of my middle finger nail and kind of scrape off the little blip. Super strange, but works well and doesn’t wipe off eyeshadow.

I definitely think your tutorial will help those afraid of liquid liner. Embrace your inner Lauren Conrad ladies!

    • Allison :

Sue, you’re a liquid liner rock star. Brilliance.

  8. Ann :

You make it look so easy! Just wondering why you use the kohl liner first instead of just the liquid – does it make application easier?

    • Allison :

It just helps me to color within the lines, if you know what I mean. Gives me someplace to draw on so I don’t get too crazy with the liquid!

  9. Dina :

Have to say I’ve always been afraid of liquid liner, but then you come along and totally take the scare factor away. Watch out world I’m gonna step outside my box!

    • Allison :

Nothing scary about it. You can totally do this.

  10. Cara :

Hey Allison! I have the same problem with liquid liner. I can never get it right. For that reason, I’ve been using gel eyeliner but using a kohl liner as a template is genius! Trying NOW! I love Stila’s lip and cheek stain as well.

    • Allison :

I think the gel doesn’t last as long, at least on me. Or you can use kohl to draw little dots and do a dot-to-dot with the liquid eyeliner.

      Do it!

      • Cara :

aw thanks for the encouragement! Mission: liquid liner is on its way! :P

  11. Trysha :

Liquid eyeliner terrifies me. I got it in my eye once and I swore off it for life. I go with a gel eyeliner and apply it with a brush. Now you have me rethinking liquid. :)

    • Allison :

Trysha, you can totally do it. I really like the marker tip application brush, I think it makes it 10x easier, seriously.

  12. Alicia :

HELLO! Where has this (or anyone!) been all my life?!?! (well, not ALL my life, just the past 6 or 7 years). I have the stuff, but hate the way it looks when I use it. Your tutorial is simple yet Brilliant! I think I’ll give it another go.

    • Allison :

Ha! It’s here now. Watch the video, try it, and let me know if it works!

  13. Jessica :

You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for someone to show me how to wear eyeliner! After your post on lining the waterline, I finally gave it a try! Thanks for giving me the push to just TRY!

    • Allison :

Jessica, yay! Seriously, it can’t hurt just to give it a go right? If you hate it, you never have to do it again, but at least you know that you’ve given it your best.

  14. Anna-Lisa (The Sister) :

It’s one of my life goal’s to be able to apply eyeliner properly. I’ve yet to achieve it. But it’s up there: you know..be a good mom, achieve enlightenment, help world peace along.. and apply eye liner correctly.
