House where time stood still

I recently read an article about this house in New Zealand that’s blowing my mind.

retro kitchen

It was built and completely decorated + furnished right after World War II for a navy man’s mother and sister, never to be lived in.

All the original furnishings are still intact: dishes, record player + records, light fixtures, original parquet floors.

I’m honestly melting a little inside just thinking about it.  Can you even imagine?  This little treasure of mid-century modern is just sitting empty {halfway across the world}, waiting for me to come live there.

Oh come on, a girl can dream.

  1. Erin @ Brownie Bites :

Oh what an absolutely darling house.. a treasure, to be sure. I’ll come live there with you!

    • Allison :

Isn’t it fabulous? I’d live there in a heartbeat!

  2. the emily :

Oh! I want to go to there!

Is it clean? Has somebody been cleaning it since 1945? Otherwise it might be kinda gross inside. But those magazines, the dishes, the floors, all of it. I want it!

    • Allison :

It is now, and it looks amazing. I don’t know if someone’s been cleaning it the whole time, but I’m so fascinated by the whole thing.

  3. katrina :

Sorry but the practical side of me is screaming: “money spent for no reason?” Where is the family?

    • Allison :

He took his money left over from WWII and built a house for his mother & sister to come live with him. They never showed up {from England}.

      A little sad.

  4. Heather :

What is the story…why did no one life there? Who keeps it up?

    • Allison :

You should go read the article, it’s fascinating! But someone is going to rent it now!
