Admittedly, I watch less TV right now than I have in the past, but that just means as I’m more selectively watching, the stuff I do watch is straight up awesomesauce. And one of those awesomesauce shows I’m watching right now is the Netflix Original Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Please tell me you’re watching Kimmy Schmidt. If you’re not, now’s the time to start.
If you like Tina Fey, (and let’s get serious here, who doesn’t?) this is the show for you. Tina Fey + Robert Carlock are the executive producers and writers of this new ridiculously fabulous, off-kilter, sarcastic comedy TV show. If you’ve been living in a cave, Tina Fey is a brilliant actress + writer from Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock and now Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame. Robert Carlock has been behind-the-scenes as a producer and writer with Tina Fey in SNL and 30 Rock, and now Kimmy Schmidt.
All of which is to say, you’re in the very best of comedy hands with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Ellie Kemper (of The Office) stars as Kimmy Schmidt, a woman rescued from an underground bunker where she’s been hanging with a totally bananas doomsday cult for 15 years. Upon being rescued, Kimmy heads to New York City where she moves in with the unbelievably loveable roommate Titus Andromedon, a failed/washed up Broadway actor who immerses Kimmy in the new modern day world, one sparkly light-up sneaker-ed day at a time.
And the hijinks are hilarious and adorable.
I regularly squeal and snort loud enough through my nose to wake both my children from a near-dead slumber while watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s the very best. The other great thing is this: episodes are only 24 minutes long. So if you don’t want to get into a hot and heavy relationship with a new show, you can have the briefest of flings and still get the very best writing of TV right now.
What are you waiting for? Go watch!
