how to: try red lipstick

yes to lipstick

I want you to step outside your box a little.  Think new.  This whole series, say ‘Yes to Something New’ is about getting outside your comfort zone.  Today I want you to try red lipstick. Seriously?  Seriously.

Watch the video and then get back to me with questions.  I want you to release your inner diva, and I know you can do it.

If you’re curious, the red lipstick I used is Revlon Super Lustrous Creme Lipstick in Black Cherry.

This stuff is the best.

This post is part 2 of a 4 part series sponsored by Yes To, Inc. the makers of the brilliant natural beauty lines  Yest to Carrots, Yes to Cucumbers, and more.  This month they are encouraging women to say “Yes To” the things they love on Facebook. I say Yes To Skinny Jeans on a Curvy Girl, Inexpensive Clothes from Unexpected Places, and Avocado in my Hair.

Well done, indeed! ;)

I love a red lip. Here’s another great shade that works for a ton of skin tones – and stays on really well, too: Laura Mercier “Truly Red”

Fierce!

Pam, it’s hard to go wrong with Laura Mercier, thanks for the color tip!

I always end up happiest with corals and pinks on my lips. It pains me to acknowledge that coral really does look best. Whenever I have gone red in the past I think I have ended up too far on the brown spectrum. I think I must be paler in real life than I am in my mind.

You’ve inspired me to head back to the store and hunt out my perfect red.

It’s okay, coral isn’t a bad color!

Try again, and let me know how it works out, there are a million reds in the spectrum.

Okay, super awesome post – I just subscribed to the RSS last week, so score. I’m a girl with huge, full lips and loads of freckles. I’ve never felt right in any lipstick. Totally going to give red another look, though.

Oh, freckles are my favorite Cat, seriously, I think they’re the best.

My lips are enormous, so lucky us, we get to wear red lipstick!

Thanks for subscribing, I appreciate it!

You’ve convinced me to try it even though I’m not a lipstick girl either. Eek! Not sure what a good tone is for a strawberry blonde? Thanks for the lip liner tip too, I wouldn’t have known that!

8 Allison November 11, 2010 at 3:09 pm

No, you can absolutely try it. You might want to check out a lighter more coral color, or try something with a little bit more pink.

thanks! can’t wait to find a good shade and try it : )

Red lips in winter are so fun! I became convinced last year when I bought “Red Lizard” by NARS. Makes me feel like a she-devil :)

11 Allison November 11, 2010 at 3:10 pm

Red lips in winter ARE fun! They sort of liven up the dreary atmosphere don’t they?

P.S. you ARE a she-devil!

12 Erin Oltmanns November 11, 2010 at 4:26 pm

I can’t do it. I’ve tried. I’m a red-lip idiot. :(

13 Allison November 12, 2010 at 10:45 am

Babe, you have GORGEOUS coloring for wearing red lipstick. You can totally do it, and I’ll hold your hand all the way to the MAC counter and back.

14 Jenny November 11, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I got a red from the MAC counter and I love it, but sometimes it does feel a little too dark on me at 9am church. What can I stick over it to tone it down? I don’t think MAC has the color you mentioned, or I heard it wrong on the video.

15 Allison November 12, 2010 at 10:46 am

The MAC color I wear is called ‘Glaze’ but any lighter color lipstick or lip gloss will help tone it down.

I suggest mac lip pencil in cherry — lining the ENTIRE lip, not just the outside and Nars RED LIZARD to go with that.

I think this is CLASSIC 50′s red that works with every skin tone and you can wear that and NOTHING else and you will get a bajillion compliments.

Also, be a friend and let people know when they have lipstick on their teeth….that’s being nice. : )

17 Allison November 12, 2010 at 10:47 am

Ooooh, thanks Kage! Red Lizard, got it.

Seriously, I think it should be a general female pact to share when there’s food in teeth or lipstick on them.

I have been in search of a red for SO long. Nothing I’ve bought looks good on me. I think I better make a trip to the MAC counter. I have earned two back2mac lipsticks, so maybe i’ll be brave and try a red.

19 Allison November 12, 2010 at 10:49 am

Do it Hannah! Especially if you have a freebie.

20 Hannah November 11, 2010 at 6:33 pm

Allison…I have a question for you. I have a lipgloss called “Strawberry Fields” by Nars. It is VERY opaque and a dark reddish pink. I wore it to church last sunday and was told that it was “inappropriate for church” by someone. (ha!) Anyway…I wanted your opinion on the matter.

See it here:

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? People need to learn to mind their own business. What you put on your lips is your business and yours alone. And for that matter, I wear a red MUCH deeper than that to church.

It’s NOT too red. Please.

22 Jenn T. November 11, 2010 at 10:38 pm

I tried red lipstick a while ago because I loved how my friend looked in red lipstick and our coloring is similar (very dark hair, very pale skin). Major fail! Of course, it could just have seemed like a fail because it was a major change (I never wear lipstick, not even paler colors). I may just try again! Thanks for the video!

23 Allison November 12, 2010 at 10:51 am

Jenn, try again! And maybe you need just a different shade, less dramatic, more appropriate for your pale skin. Try something with a little bit more plum in a lighter shade.

Good luck!

Allison, I came across this post in my feeds. I LOVE red lipstick and have about 14 different versions of the colour. Always on the hunt for a “perfect” red, which of course, doesn’t exist but one can dream. I like “Ladybug” by MAC and Marcelle had some fabulous reds, don’t know if it’s the current line.

Fabulous job on the video and the tips!

25 Allison November 12, 2010 at 10:52 am

Me too! I can’t get enough red in my life.

Thanks so much for the color ideas, I’ll check them out.

26 Mama Bear November 15, 2010 at 4:04 pm

My favorite “red” is is the Black Honey shade of Almost Lipstick by Clinique. On me if I skip the chapstick underneath it is quite red, but with a little chapstick as a base, it’s a perfect shade for every day. Love it, and easy for anyone to wear.

27 Allison November 16, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Mama Bear, thanks for the tip! Clinique is really hit and miss for me, I feel like their colors are too light, but I’ll check it out, thanks.

28 Marie November 16, 2010 at 7:20 pm

I’m going to wow you with RED the next time I see you!

29 Allison November 16, 2010 at 8:08 pm

I know you have it in you, I’ve SEEN it!

30 Piper December 15, 2010 at 9:02 pm

Any tips on a red lipstick that will stay put? I LOVE wearing a red lip but I always find myself checking and rechecking and reapplying. Maybe I’m too much of a child for such a grown up item….
