How I like to wear jeans: everyday look

I’m obsessed with fashion.  Like, there are literally 15 fashion magazines stacked up next to my bed as I write this, kind of obsessed.

But I’m very sartorially practical, and the sad {and happy} truth of it all is that I don’t work at a trendy NYC agency, but in my cozy home office instead.  Which means on a day-to-day basis the only humans who see me are in my carpool {hi kids!}, or have been married to me for quite some time {hi honey!}, so I don’t get sussed up a lot.  My everyday look is pretty much a variation on the theme: jeans and a tee.

I’ve posted extensively about my love affair with denim on my What I wore Wednesday series and today as part 1 of a two part series, I’m going to show you how I like to wear jeans for an everyday look.

This is a pretty casual look, but if you’re looking to tone it down a notch {but whyyyyyyyy?} you could swap the nude heels for a pair of converse or ballet flats.  And if you’re jewelry averse {I’m a bit of jewelry whore, I wear this much on a daily basis}, you could always take off all the bangles and big fat statement rings.

I happen to think they make the outfit.

And I don’t even have enough time in the day to tell you how much I love the bright orange/tangerine/coral I’m sporting on my digits.

You can tell a lot from a person’s nails. When a life starts to unravel, they’re among the first to go.” Ian McEwan -Saturday

Here’s a similar look I pieced together:

every day look

bohemian top, nude pumps, Levi’s®, messenger bag,

What do you wear every day?  Are you allowed to wear jeans and a tee to your office or is it more of a buttoned up dress code?  I’m really curious how many of you are allowed to wear something as casual as jeans and a t-shirt to work.  Spill!

Sometimes I put out the fires and sometimes I start them. Sometimes I really do have it all together. Sometimes my children say otherwise. We just like to keep it real around here.

I, too, could wear jeans every single day. My fav look is jeans, boots and a cool top. BTW, very cool fedora.

  2. Bobbi :

As a SAHM, I love me some jeans. I wear them when I leave my house 90% of the time.

  3. kelley :

I, too, wear jeans just about everyday but I can assure you I don’t ever look this cute or pulled together. You have fashion mags, I have cookbooks. :)

I am a Graphic Designer at a small publishing firm and I wear jeans every day to work (pretty much-unless we have someone coming into the office to meet with us) I don’t meet with clients (we do email and phone stuff only) so the dress code is pretty relaxed. I always wear dark denim, no fading or holes (I think it looks less casual that way) with a cami (usually with some lace trim or some special embellishment) with a cardigan over it and either some form of boots/ballet flats or the occasional less than 2 inch heel or wedge, and of course I always wear some jewelry (usually silver rings and an interesting necklace) or a scarf. I try to always look “put together” when I go to work because even though we have a relaxed dress code, I want to look like I am “professionally casual.”

I teach at a law school and run a legal clinic, so on those days (3 days/week) I get to dress up in dresses and skirts and heels. Love it. But at heart, I’m a jeans girl so I love those days, too. In winter, jeans & boots, usually my fave Lucchese cowboy boots but sometimes I bust out the Fryes. In summer, shorts and flip flops or a sundress/sandals combo. I’m with you on the jewelry–I love things on my wrist and big rings.

Being a stay at home mom of three, jeans are my main staple. I don’t wash them every single day- so I love day 2 and 3 of my jeans! (Does that sound crazy?) Love jeans with tees and flippys, with cardi’s and clogs, and chunky beads, great bracelets and funky rings. My problem is finding great REASONABLY priced jeans. What are your favorite jeans?? Enjoy your blog- read it daily! Love all of the fashion tips.

I could wear jeans every day at work, but I really try to limit myself to once or twice a week – sometimes I get lazy, though… I do love dark skinny denim with a tunic right now. It feels comfy but still pulled together and a wee bit funky. And yes – arm party of bracelets makes any outfit!

    • DeeDee V. :

oh! and your bangs look RAD in that first pic.

  8. Laura :

Jeans all the way. We have uniforms for work, unfortunately…blah. However, I’m not a big jewelry girl. I can handle a ring, maybe a bracelet and a simple necklace, but that’s about it.

  9. Jenny :

Love the outfit and Ian McEwan. He is a writer who Knows Things. I haven’t painted my toenails in a couple months…

  10. Kami :

I’m loving your bracelets! So cute!

  11. suzanne @ pretty swell :

I can really relate to the first couple of paragraphs you wrote … I LOVE fashion, but I can’t figure out how it fits into my life (and I feel too self-conscious when I work up the courage to take risks). When I’m home with the girls, it’s yoga pants and a tee. At work, I’m pretty conservative. One of my biggest goals this year is to get braver about what I wear. I have a closet full of interesting things I’ve never put on my body. It’s ridiculous! I fall in love at the store, then when it comes time to dress in the morning, I reach for the same old boring stuff … and hardly ever the fun accessories. Today I forced myself to slip on red shoes instead of black ones, and it felt GOOD. Thanks for the inspiration (always).

And, I have to know: what is name of that nail color? Love it!

  12. dawn :

That quote made me sad. Because my life is not unraveling. But… SCARY and TENSE movies make my nails unravel!!! ;)

  13. jennyonthespot :

    All of it. I love. I love. I love I love I love… Especially the You :)

  14. Marie :

Hello, hot mama!! I love that outfit. Those jeans! Since I’m not heels girl, find me some beige flats and I’m yours!

  15. Beth Lemon :

Oh dear. So if you looked at my nails then…. you would see I AM unraveled! But, as always you look lovely. Hope you are feeling better too.

  16. Anne :

    Your outfit is fierce!
OK, I’m a gov’t lawyer, so sometimes I can wear jeans on Friday–if I don’t have a meeting or anything. Some people in my office go all the way with casual friday (tee shirts and tennies), but I like to wear a cardigan and heels with them.
On the weekends (after a long week of suits and heels), I’m dressed up if I put on jeans. I usually am wearing athletic shorts or something equally horrible.

  17. Andy :

You’ve inspired me. My new goal is to work jeans into my everyday wardrobe. I struggle with getting them long enough to not look ridiculous with heels (super long), and short enough to not trip over in flats (I am super short).

  18. Amy :

Oh my word! I want your nude heels so bad it hurts :) Such a beautiful look! I love it! xo

  19. Pauline :

Allison…I was going through some old magazine articles and came across your site through another site. I decided to take a look and was very pleased that I took the time! I am recently retired at 66 and still wearing jeans on a daily basis as I did at work. Love how you have put together “your look”! It’s great and each item compliments the other. You are not afraid of color, a mistake that a lot of women make when putting together an outfit. It really can change the dynamics of the look and give a real boost to one’s mood. Jewelry is a big part of “my look” and I have tons of costume pieces (from the flea market) that I love to wear. Thank you for letting us know just how it should be done!! Look forward to future blogs…
