horatio hornblower series on A&E

Have you ever watched Horatio Hornblower? I may have. Once, or twice. It’s actually a whole series of DVD’s, so I have an excuse.

I didn’t understand all the hubbub a few years ago when my friends were swooning over the T.V. series on A&E; but. Well. I‘ve seen the light. Horatio is noble, honest, and full of integrity. Also? He’s not hard to look at while he’s swasbuckles and kills pirates.

I’ve also heard, via my many hours spent on IMdb, the actor who plays him, Ioan Gruffudd {pronounced yo-wahnn griffith – yes, I know too much} is actually a gentleman in real life. So, there’s that.

Do you watch anything, DVD or a series on TV, that gets you through the cold winter months? Seriously, do you?

I’m team: Captain Hornblower. All the way.

Try Torchwood. Captain Jack is well Captain Jack.

    • Allison :

I’ve never seen Torchwood! Thanks for the great suggestion.

  2. alisha :

I love Horatio Hornblower, I was swooning over him too, great show!!

    • Allison :

I swoon over him every time I watch. It’s a good thing there are so many movies is all I’m saying.

  3. TM_Erin :

I am SO adding this to my netflix. I love me some swashbucklers.

    • Allison :

      Erin,

Horatio is right up your alley. A little on the skinny side for our tastes, but very *swashbuckle-y* just the same.

  4. Alisha :

    • Allison :

Isn’t he just honorable and noble and all those things? And not hard on the eyes. It helps.

  5. Jenny :

My entire family watched those over Christmas a few years ago and it was the best ever.

There is this hysterical website with pictures from the movies and fake dialouge that my sisters and I would read, but I cannot remember the link.

    • Allison :

      Jenny,

It is the best ever. Ever. I think I could look at the photos about the show with the fake dialogue, but a little part of me would feel vaguely insulted.

Now I understand what you were tweeting about! I will have to add Horatio to the list of things to watch; it looks like a good series.

    • Allison :

You must. Please. And report back and tell me what you think.

Please tell us you've already watched North and South. Not the one with Patrick Swayzee… this one! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417349/ One of the most romantic kissing scenes in the WORLD.

    • Allison :

You know what’s ridiculous? I haven’t seen it! I put it on my Netflix as soon as you mentioned it. I’ll let you know how it goes.

  8. KJ :

Foxy swashbuckling indeed! I'm wondering why I've never head of this…but I do thoroughly enjoy Masterpiece Theatre's offerings of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens classics. And now I have to discover Torchwood and Captain Jack (or are they the same thing?) too! Winter is stickin' around up here.

    • Allison :

I don’t know why I didn’t know about Torchwood before now. I think it IS the same thing. Either way, I’m going to check it out.

Keep me posted on Horatio, I have a feeling you’ll swoon.

I have only seen Horatio Hornblower once (we borrowed it from friends who netflix'ed it). I love all those british period drama mini-series. They seem to be extra good (and extra long) when they are based on novels from the time, rather than modern day writers trying to capture the time period. Masterpiece Classics had Cranford, and Return to Cranford, both were wonderful. (I have turned into a MC junkie, I love all of their shows, usually made be the BBC.) I've been sucked into the series "Larkrise to Candleford" that airs on PBS/KUED a few times a week (Sun. nights and I think thurs. or Sat. evenings).

Do I get a prize for longest comment so far? I should go to bed now.

    • Allison :

I am a total Masterpiece junkie, I watch every one I can get my hands on. Love love love.

I am slightly ashamed to say that I have seen EVERY episode in EVERY Season of Stargate AND Stargate Atlantis. And I have seen any movie they have ever made…which I think was about three.

All I have to say for myself is that it's always been my husbands idea. I may or may not have willingly participated.

    • Allison :

There is nothing to be ashamed of at all. We all have our little vices. And those aren’t even vices.

There’s nothing wrong with a little eye candy, husband participation or no.

  11. Marie {Make and Takes} :

Come on, admit you've seen it more than twice!!!

I guess we need to have a girl's weekend and watch some horatio!!

    • Allison :

Alright. Three times. No, FOUR. I’ll stop there, after that it just starts to smack of awkward.

We need a girls retreat with a hot tub + horatio + ice cream + diet dr pepper.

  12. ALC :

I am also a Masterpiece junkie. Lately I haven't seen anything to die for. I liked the new "Emma" all right but secretly think Gywennie might have been better. I am loving "Lark Rise to Candleford". I love all Elizabeth Gaskell interpretations as well. I haven't watched Horatio but it is EXTREMELY popular at the library where I work. I watched a couple of Torchwoods but it is definitely not my cup of tea.

    • Allison :

Everything Masterpiece is at least good enough to start off the week on Sunday night. Some, better than others.

You MUST watch Horatio. He’s all that’s good and true and wonderful about the world. And, he’s very, uh, rather handsome.
