Valentine’s Day is on a Saturday this year, which may mean a little extra time in the morning to make the day a little extra special for your sweethearts. My mother always tried to do something fun for breakfast on Valentine’s Day–she even had a special toast embosser that said “I love you” which she stamped into the bread prior to toasting. I’ve never seen another one like it…
Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, “stamp” but don’t cut all the way out, a heart shape in each slice of bread. Toast as usual. The heart will show up perfectly. Butter the entire slice, and spread your favorite toast topping in the heart (Strawberry Jam? Cinnamon Sugar?)
Add chocolate chips to your pancakes as they cook. When done, top with sliced strawberries, sliced almonds and whipped cream. Bonus points for making them heart shaped. More bonus points for extra chocolate chips.
Stuffed French Toast:
There are dozens of versions out there, utilizing everything from bacon and apples to cream cheese and strawberries. This recipe from Gourmet Magazine sounds perfect. I’d serve with a little bit of Nutella. Yummmm.
Of course, serve hot chocolate with plenty of marshmallows (I might try these) and anything red–be it fruit, juice or jam. Enjoy breakfast with your Valentines by candlelight.
