cheap plates and bowls

I’m notoriously cheap.  StingyTight with my money.  Whatever you want to call it, it’s what I am.  I grew up pretty poor {sorry mom, we were poor, it’s true} and I just can’t seem to spend too much on inconsequential things.

Let me amend that.  I have been known to buy dollar store makeup, but I don’t beat myself up for spending $16 on eyeshadow at M.A.C. so I suppose it’s selective thriftiness.

Anyway, expensive dinnerware just doesn’t appeal to me.  I don’t see the point.  My kids break everything that moves, so I don’t want to put money towards something irrelevant.

My solution is cheap plates and bowls.  From the dollar store, people.  Honestly, it’s all the rage.  Well, I don’t know if it’s all the rage, but it certainly is in my house.

I picked up 8 white plates and 8 matching white bowls for a whopping total of $16 at the Dollar Store.  Now when my kids chip a bowl I don’t have a coronary, I just replace it for a dollar.

We’ll probably all die of lead poisoning, but that’s neither here nor there.

Love those dishes! I couldn’t agree more with your logic!!

    • Petit Elefant :

I know, makeup takes precedent every time.

  2. the wanna be country girl :

I totally agree. I love very basic dinner ware. Mine are white also. A blank canvas to fill with beautiful meals!

    • Petit Elefant :

You can’t go wrong with white, you’re right, it’s a blank canvas!

  3. Marianne :

I was totally thinking ‘lead poisoning’ in the back of my head while reading this! That is funny!

    • Petit Elefant :

It’s the first thing I thought when I warmed them up the first time in the microwave. Lead.

  4. jill :

those are fabulous! i’d totally risk lead poising to pick up a set of those beauties for a mere 16 smackers. gotta love the dollar store! i was just there yesterday to pick up a new shower cap…yowza, how old does that make me sound?!

    • Petit Elefant :

Right? The square-ness of them had me at hello.

  5. katrina :

  6. Julie @ The Mom Slant :

I’m so with you. I spend horrendous amounts on hair product, but other stuff is just not worth splurging on. Beside white dishes are always in style.

    • Petit Elefant :

It’s the priorities in life that make the difference Julie, really.

    Cheap AND cute–a winning combo!

Should I tell you how much I’ve spent on cooking pots? (not spent—INVESTED). Better not!

See, it’s a good thing I only buy eyeshadow once every six years…:-)

    • Petit Elefant :

Tara, it’s an investment in your FUTURE. You had to make those purchases. No apologies.

  8. Amanda :

I do the same thing! I only buy white, cheap dishes… Even if every plate is a different shape and size, the white makes everything look intentional ;p

    • Petit Elefant :

They always look amazing don’t they? White is universally flattering, even in dishware.

I’m with you. I got mine in a popular Asian dollar store downtown and wouldn’t you know it, we see the same pattern at almost all the Thai restaurants we frequent. HA! I *heart* the dollar store.

    • Petit Elefant :

Those Thai restaurants know what they’re doing. And presentation is everything.

I heart the dollar store too. I should have a frequent stamp card or something.

  10. Melanie :

I was just thinking of heading to IKEA tomorrow for cheap white dishes…will have to check out the dollar store instead! I enjoy the square-ness too :)

    • Petit Elefant :

Do it! I have an entire OTHER set {shhh} from IKEA and they’re gorgeous. Plus, they match the dollar store white set.

  11. Heather :

  12. Heather :

    • Allison :
