Longer lasting lip color

by Allison on January 30, 2012 in Beauty, Style · 25 comments

Finding longer lasting lip color is like happening upon a pasture full of unicorns.  It just doesn’t happen.  Everyone talks about it like it’s no big thing,

Oh my amazing lipstick?  My girl at the {muffled muffled, garble garble} counter just keeps it in stock for me.  I don’t even know what it’s called!  *giggle*

Liar.

If girlfriend has perfect lipstick all through dinner, she’s got a secret up her sleeve she doesn’t want you to know about.  Especially if you’re frenemies.  Swapping that kind of secret is a thing for insiders only, best friends and sisters.  After that, it’s every woman for herself.

You know I’m always looking out for you though.  You can feel it in your blood, I always have your back.  I wouldn’t want you to {gasp!} go out in public with crackly uneven lip color.  *shudder*

I have a cheap solution for you: Revlon Lip Stain.  This stuff is available at the drugstore, your supermarket, probably the gas station on the corner.  It’s between $5-8 and is worth sacrificing your daily cappuccino.  It’s not meant to replace the hardcore stuff in your purse, but I really like it for day-to-day business.

And I do mean business.

If you want to get really technical about it I can kiss my husband, business like, eat, drink, and be merry without a single smudge.  It’s a quick solution for keeping a bit of color on your face without the fear of lipstick on your teeth {the worst} or color smearing down your chin {just kidding, that’s the worst}.

Problem solved: longer lasting lip color for under $10.  Boom goes the dynamite.

*p.s. let’s not comment on the wrinkles and laugh lines, they’re worth more than $10 a pop.

Make-up tips for photography

by Allison on January 21, 2012 in Beauty, Style · 11 comments

I’m teaching a design camp at Altitude Summit in Salt Lake City this weekend about make-up tips for photography.  You know, for all your big photo shoots.  So I thought I’d share the bulk of my presentation here with you, because I’m a giver.  {but mostly because I need cliff notes while I’m presenting}

Regular makeup doesn’t do the job when you’re being photographed, especially if the photographer is using any kind of flash.  It’s really easy for the colors on your face to get blown out {too white} and distorted from what they naturally look like, but I’m going to share a few little make-up tricks anyone can do to look fabulous in photos.

makeup tips for photography

Make-up tips for photography

  • start with a clean, moisturized face
  • groom your eyebrows: shape/pluck/spoolie, fill in with eyeshadow
  • put on your makeup in natural light
  • less is more for an everyday look, for a photo shoot amp it up a little
  • use a make-up primer to fill in lines and scars
  • start with a tinted moisturizer, blend really well
  • always tap your brush before applying blush and eyeshadow to get rid of excess color
  • apply blush at the apples of cheeks, leave most of the color there and blend up towards ears
  • if you don’t have an eyeshadow primer, use a foundation brush and apply a small amount of foundation on eyelids before applying eyeshadow
  • apply foundation to your lips too, it will help the lipstick/lip-gloss last
  • apply eyeshadow with one brush + blend with another, use about 1/3 more eyeshadow than normal
  • use only matte colors no shimmery or glittery colors, they’ll reflect the light
  • avoid hard lines with eyeliner
  • only use liquid eyeliner on the top lid
  • go two shades lighter on lipstick, dark can look too harsh
  • use a lip liner with the same shade of your lipstick/lip-gloss, fill your lips in using a lipstick brush
  • apply a small dot of lighter lipstick/lip-gloss to the center of your lips, it will make them look more full
  • curl your eyelashes, always always always
  • apply 2-3 coats of mascara
  • use false lashes if you dare, they look amazing in photos
  • use a sponge with moisturizer to remove any traces of errant eyeshadow
  • apply a foundation just one color darker than your normal skin tone; not dark dark, but just one shade darker
  • blend foundation really really well
  • use under eye concealer to cover any dark circles you might have
  • finish off with powder all over your face, and blend it with a big fat brush
  • take some digital photos with your camera when you’re done to get a feel for what you’ll look like; use a flash
  • keep a pack of rice paper in your purse, they’re these amazing little absorbent sheets that pull oil off your face

That’s it, that’s all you need to know.  Head off to the races and get your pretty self photographed, you look gorgeous already.

Dye your hair at home

by Allison on January 16, 2012 in Beauty, Style · 22 comments

My hair started going grey a handful of a years ago.

Actually, I lie.

I found my first grey hair the night of the Christmas dance my senior year in high school.  There I was primping in the bathroom waiting for my date to show up, when I found a silver hair on my wee baby 17-year-old head.

I’m afraid its only been downhill from there.  I’ve spent the intervening years plucking a handful of grey hairs at a time from the crown of my head.  That worked out okay until the grey decided to spread out and make itself at home, at which point I started dyeing my hair with box color every 6 weeks.

After a little trial and error I found the right brand and color for me: Clairol Nice n’ Easy dark brown.  Now I buy two boxes at a time whenever it’s on sale and dye my hair in the comfort of my own bathroom, and today I’m going to tell you how to dye your hair at home with all the little tricks I’ve learned the hard way.

Here’s what you need to dye your hair at home:

  • box of hair dye
  • grubby old t-shirt and a pair of old sweats
  • stained old towel
  • wet washcloth
  • bathroom or kitchen sink

tip: dye dirty hair that’s hasn’t been shampooed for at least a day, it will help the color absorb better

Pick your color, bring it home and open up the box.  Spread out the contents.  You should have some instructions, a pair of rubber gloves, a color formula and a bottle of activator.  Put on your grubby old clothes and grab the old towel and washcloth.

tip: buy 2 boxes of hair dye if your hair is extra thick and/or extra long to make sure you have enough dye for full coverage

  • Step 1: Put the rubber gloves on and uncap the activator.
  • Step 2: Uncap the color formula and dump it into the color activator bottle.  Put your rubber gloved finger over the top and shake until they’re both combined.

tip: pull your hair back into different sections so the dye can penetrate each section separately

tip: drape old towel over your shoulders so the dye won’t drip onto your shoulders

  • Step 3: Smooth Vaseline or hair conditioner along your hairline, around your ears, and along the nape of your neck.  This will help prevent the dye from staining your skin.  Spread the dye into each section of hair from root to tip until thoroughly saturated.
  • Step 4: Use a Q-tip to remove any leftover smudges of hair dye along the hairline and tips of the ears.
  • Step 5: Once your hair is completely covered in dye leave it on for 20-25 minutes.  Use a wet washcloth to clean any errant globs of dye that have found their way onto your: counter, mirror, sink, face, floor, neck.  Trust me on this one.
  • Step 6: Once the time is up, put your head over a sink or tub and use lukewarm water to rinse the dye from your hair completely.  Once the water runs clear squeeze out all the remaining water and wrap hair in a towel.

That’s it!  The dye I use comes with a deep conditioner so I apply it straight onto my hair while it’s wet and leave it on overnight.  The first few times I wash my hair a bunch of color washes out, but pretty soon it looks smoking hot and stays that way for about 4-6 weeks.  You too can have all this for the low, low price of $5.99 a box.

Use all the cash you save to buy some sassy makeup and shoes.

I won’t tell a soul.
