Ronique Gibson of the blog Home Stagetecture, a home staging company, is guest blogging today. And I’m excited. I love going into staged homes to get ideas for decor in my own lived-in house.

So whether you’re in the market for selling your home or you just need ideas for keeping your home beautiful {me, me!}, this one’s for you. Enjoy.

Make your space inviting and fun!

You know that feeling when you stay in a posh hotel? The great views and big comfy furniture makes you want to curl up with your favorite coffee and take a nap? That feeling is what you want to bottle and release when home buyers are coming to look at your home. Staging your home is about setting the “stage” and marketing your home to its fullest potential.

Follow these simple tips to make your home marketable, even if you’re living in it!

You can still live! Make it functional and spacious with organizers.

1.) De-clutter:

It’s a word that we hear all the time, but do you know how to do it in your home? Here’s the best way: live as though your favorite person is coming to stay every day. This means taking an inventory of every room and leaving only essentials. In your rooms, space and light is key. Take advantage of hidden storage spaces: under your bed, vertical space in your closets, and cool organizers like baskets and complementary colored bins. Have limited space? Invest in functional organizers where you can stash a lot of essentials you need on hand every day.

Consider sheers to let light in, but not distract from the view.

2.)Light:

If your rooms are dark and closed in, they will feel cold an unappealing. If you don’t have ample light pouring into your rooms, consider painting the rooms with light neutral colors. If you do have good sources of light, show them off! Remove heavy drapery and clean the windows. Have a great view? Place a chair or bed in that direction to make buyers see it too.

When you let in light, make sure the rooms are clean. Remember, every time you leave the house your next home buyer may come into your home. Leave it looking great every time, not just sometimes.

The smells of your home may “seal the deal”

3.) Make it feel like home:

If you know that your home is going to be shown, (called a “showing”) try to clean the night before. This way the smell of cleaning products isn’t in the air. Have you ever heard to bake cookies so the house smells great? It’s true! Home buyers are led by their senses. If you can make the home look, feel, and smell inviting you’re on the way to an offer.

Lastly, be patient and enjoy your home while it’s clean and uncluttered. If you need help, hire a cleaning service to come weekly or bi-weekly. It will remove some stress and you’ll keep your home fresh and inviting.

Relax, it will happen.

organizing drawers.

by Allison on January 7, 2010 in organization · 19 comments

January for me, like the rest of the country, is about organization. In January I like to pretend that I can make my house look like something out of a Martha catalog. Come on, it’s possible.

My first step in making strides to organized living is getting the drawers under control. The drawers all over my house are brimming with *stuff* and the only way for me to keep them organized is with little organizing trays.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who sleeps better at night with organized drawers.

Anyway, I found these baskets in the kitchen section of a big box store in packages of three. For a dollar. They’re so cheap you can organize your entire life for under $10. Seriously.

Here are my kitchen *junk* drawers. You know the ones, they’re filled with random bits of things you can’t throw out because you know you’ll need them eventually?

I mean, mine have Popsicle sticks, rubber bands, hand sanitizer, dice, and earplugs. I need all these things, I just need them organized.

Doesn’t the drawer look so under control with the bins? I literally have these bins in every room of the house: in my desk in the study, in my bathroom drawers, kids rooms, you name it.

Ahhhh, organized junk drawers and all is right with the world.

What do you do to organize your house in January?

the hall closet

by Kimberly on September 18, 2009 in organization · 10 comments

Typically a dumping ground for handbags, backpacks, soccer balls, vacuums, parkas and all other manner of paraphernalia, the hall closet can be a scary place. But it doesn’t have to be. Sure, it probably won’t ever look like a page out of a magazine, but a few inexpensive tools can make it functional and tidy. Even with husbands and children on the loose.
Our hall closet is small, but did come with built-in cubbies up one side. The other side has a hanging rod for coats. Rather than dump odds and ends any which way in the cubbies, I’ve designated a purpose for each one. I even went so far as to label (thanks allison!) each cubby to make it idiot-proof: Tools. Purses. Extra toiletries & travel size items. Take-along entertainment for kiddos ( board books, children’s magazines, a pencil case with crayons & stickers, etc.). Camera. First aid kit. The plastic bins (find them anywhere for a couple of bucks each) are easy to pull out when I need something, and prevent contents from falling onto the floor. If you don’t have cubbies, go with this or these, or install your own with a kit from the hardware store.
I really love the hanging shoe bag (also find these anywhere for about $15). I’ve praised its merits and many uses before, now you can see it in action. It hangs over the closet door and holds myriad tchotchkes in plain sight. The contents of ours changes with the seasons. Sunscreen, insect repellent will soon be replaced with mittens and hats. Out of season items are tossed in a basket on the very top shelf. Other pockets hold miscellaneous hardware like tiny screwdrivers, flashlight, lint brush, binoculars, purse extras like lip gloss and alcohol gel. Also a spare case of baby wipes, umbrella. The kinds of things that always get lost in a random drawer somewhere. I keep kid-friendly items in the bottom pockets–little toys from kids meals (yes, we eat those sometimes) and sidewalk chalk. Everything has a place, all in one place. Bliss.

CONFESSION TIME, by Alma Loveland I am not on vacation. My house is a little (a lot) disorderly right now. Smart, Decorative Storage

by Alma March 2, 2009home_decorating

Okay, so here’s another thing I’ve picked up on as a brand new mom. There’s some more stuff that I have to store now, and have handy. Like diapers and changing supplies. Before the baby came along, I just imagined that every time I would change his diaper, I’d be taking him into his nursery [...]

Calendars

by Kimberly January 1, 2009organization

As I prepared to organize my life today, I realized in a panic I don’t have a 2009 calendar. Nothing, save post-it-notes, on which to record all the myriad obligations, appointments, special dates, and menu plans for the coming weeks, months and year.  So I did a little window shopping for a pretty new calendar.  [...]
