You know how sometimes you buy yummy *lavender* bubble bath and lotion for your baby, thinking you’re really going to get something that smells like lavender? And then you open it up and use it on your wee little babe only to realize it smells like, uh, any other lotion at the store? If it doesn’t happen to you, just pretend it does so this story will work.

I’ve actually had that happen on more than one occasion and it’s pretty disappointing. Especially when I need the *calming* influences of lavender on my children. My first overwhelming reaction to opening the products from Maclaren was *ooooh it actually smells like it’s supposed to!*. Like lavender. Clean, pure, organic wholesomeness. You know you can smell the difference, can’t you? I can, and it’s lovely.

Maclaren takes their organic-ness pretty seriously. No synthetics in any of their products, at all. Which, if you’re a new mom putting lotions and potions all over your baby is a pretty big promise. You don’t want chemicals on that brand spanking new skin! Not only that, all of the packaging for Maclaren’s lovely, organic, wholesome products is made from recyclable material. Beat that.

Summer is almost over. (Ooh, I said it out loud). Feet ravaged by flip flops, hands ravaged by gardening, nerves worn by kids home from school. Sounds like it’s time for a little TLC for mommy. The Body Shop wants to help with thier new Organic Virgin Coconut Oil bath and body care products.
The Giveaway: a collection of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil creams, scrubs and
butters valued at over $70!

You can read more about them here, or you could just take my word that they are divine! Cleanse with the rich shower cream, smooth rough heels and elbows with the body scrub, soften–really soften–with the body butter, and amp up your summer glow with the shimmer lotion. No summer beach getaway for me this year. Boo. But The Body Shop is looking out for me by making me feel a little bit like I’m lounging surf-side on a secluded island. Even if that island happens to by my bathtub and secluded means I’ve locked the bathroom door. Their new line of organic virgin coconut oil bath treats is deliciously divine. The fragrance alone is perfection: coconut-ty but more sophisticated than that oily glop I slathered on in my teen years. You know what I’m talking about.
I love to use the body scrub in the shower (good-bye rough edges) and follow with the body butter. To die for. The shower cream is a notch or two beyond typical shower gels, and the shimmer lotion is oooh-la-la without being too glittery or juvenile. Like a luxurious tropical vacation in my bathroom. I’ll take it, thank you very much.
The Body Shop’s new Coconut line is also smart: employing organic, community trade coconut farmers in Samoa. Every step of the process is done by hand, often by multiple generations of small-scale farmers. Read more here and here. And this lovely video (bottom right of the page) is definitely worth a look. You’ll feel so good about indulging yourself via The Body Shop.

Stay tuned for a coconut giveaway Monday morning. I promise you’ll want in on it.

spring garden planting step 2.

by Allison April 21, 2009living green

A few weeks ago I started my garden and shared it with all of you here. Well, after the planting, and watering, and waiting comes the good stuff: the sprouting! Not all of my plants have sprouted, some of them need a little more time than others. That’s normal. Some creatures are just late bloomers; [...]

Spring Cleaning

by Kimberly April 3, 2009living green

Spring. Cleaning. They just go together and I’m so glad. I look forward to it every year. Casting open my windows to breathe the fresh air. Changing bed linens from cozy flannel to crisp white cotton. Scrubbing and scouring every surface, nook and cranny until gleaming.  Happily for me my last issue of Real Simple was [...]

composting.

by Allison January 12, 2009living green

One of my favorite sites, Simple Mom, had a great article today about composting. It’s something I’ve wanted to try for a long time but haven’t really figured out how to make it happen. This article gives a pretty basic, step-by-step guide to making your own compost bin. I’m really going to do this, starting [...]

diet coke is no joke.

by Allison September 22, 2008living green

Hang in there with me this week as I’ve gone off caffeine cold turkey {not recommended} and am feeling the full brunt of it. I’ve read that it’s similar to detoxing off heroin, and while I can’t personally attest to that, I’m really struggling. If I’m not quite up to my usual posts this week, [...]
