finished bathroom remodel.

The beautiful kids bathroom project {nightmare} is over. It took approximately 4 years, 285 days, and 3 hours. Not too shabby.

I am proud to say however, we didn’t hire out a single part of the bathroom. Viktor did all the wiring, plumbing, & tiling. I did the grunt work like the paint, grout, scrubbing. Awesome.

The grant total price of the bathroom, top to bottom was $1,200. I’m really proud of that. Especially considering the fact that when we called *specialist* bathroom remodel companies, our quotes ranged from the low, low price of $10,000 to the completely obscene $50,000. Keep in mind this is all for an itty bitty kids bathroom.

Here’s what’s in the bathroom:

  • Tile & Wainscot
  • Pedestal Sink & Toilet
  • Tub
  • Miscellaneous Accessories

We salvaged the pedestal sink and toilet from a house that was being demolished, which saved a bunch of money right off the bat. The tile we bought from Home Depot and did ourselves, ditto the wainscoting. The tub was the killer, we had to wait for a {very short} 4 footer to show up at Lowe’s. We serendipitously wandered into that one; to special order a tub that small is pretty pricey. The shower curtain & miscellaneous accessories we got at a local big box store, and all the hardware: towel holders, toilet paper holder, etc. we got in the As-Is section of IKEA, totaling less than $30. Seriously.

The mirror is my favorite part I think. Viktor took a cheap IKEA mirror {less than $10} framed it in with wood, painted it white, and called it good. I LOVE it. I’d show you a close-up but I haven’t cleaned the mirror, and that’s just embarrassing.

Cheers to a new bathroom.

  1. Jodie B-C :

Oh this is just the inspiration/motivation I needed!! We are currently at 1 year, 2 months and 22 days into our kids' bathroom remodeling project. So far I have demolished walls…. then called to get an estimate on tiling. Thank you so much for sharing this story! I feel renewed again…I CAN DO the tiling for less than the estimated price! It can be done!!! Yours looks fabulous!

  2. Laura Ferry-Jimenez :

yay… congrats! :) I want to redo my hall bath into a fun kids bathroom. sigh. one day.

  3. Petit Elefant :

    Jodie B-C,

You totally can do it. Our estimates were insane so we ended up doing it in pieces. It's doable. And on the cheap too.

    Laura Ferry-Jimenez,

We didn't have a choice but to do it. Everything was leaky and molding into the floor. Worth it though…

Thank you! The shower curtain rocks huh? $15.

  4. KJ :

    very very nice!

  5. Petit Elefant :

Thank you. I'm loving every inch of it.

  6. Petit Elefant :

    Not too shabby right?

I'd love it if you did some photos for me. Her house is GORGEOUS.

  7. Azúcar :

    I am so impressed.

  8. erin nyc :

Oh my– IT IS AMAZING!! You guys are something else. we hung lights and shelves the other day and I was thinking we were all that…but I know realize we will never be "all that" until we have laid tiled and installed plumbing. You inspire us!

  9. Marie {Make and Takes} :

WHAT!! How did I not know about this. I remember you saying something in passing, but didn't know it was going to be so major!! I LOVE it! Can I hire you and Victor to help me with my front room?!!! Nice job!

  10. aimee :

It really looks great. What an amazing price too. When I heard the price it actually made me like it even more!

  11. Petit Elefant :

As you should be. I mean, I'm impressive.

    Erin nyc,

You get pretty clever when you have to. I mean, in the face of a $10k remodel, we got creative.

I thought I took you up there! You'll have to come look when you're over. Yes, we totally hire out as long as you don't mind marital bickering.

    Thank you!

We're all about DIY. You don't even need your husband. Usually I do stuff without him, but he wanted in on this one.

  12. Cinnamon*Sticks Boutique :

    Wow Allison!

I love the tile detail on the ceiling, nice touch!

  13. likeschocolate :

Congratulations! It is gorgeous! You should be proud.

  14. Petit Elefant :

    aimee heff,

I'm all about doing things on the cheap. It's in my blood. And bank account, frankly.

    Cinnamon Sticks Boutique,

Thank you! That ceiling {shaking my fist} was a hassle, but it turned out so well now I want it in the master bath.

thank you. is it wrong that i totally am? proud, i mean.

  15. Illinivicki :

Great job, guys! SO much to be proud of. Love the shower curtain and the wain-scoting.

  16. Petit Elefant :

I LOVE that idea! I don't know if I could have talked him into buying red paint though. We already had the white from the trim. Go for it!

  17. AlliSMiles :

Amazing! That reminds me that I need to do photos of your friend's home.

  18. Kami :

I love it! Good Work Viktor! I love the shape of the mirror!

  19. Mamma :

Oh A–It's beautiful!! I'm so impressed with all of your hard work and cost savings.

  20. erin :

It looks very nice. I am impressed that you guys did it yourself, that's awesome. My husband is so not handy. He and I would not even know where to begin. I would love to learn how to DIY more things. Love the shower curtain. I am sure your kiddos love it as well.

  21. Laura :

darling. your mirror is very distinctive and i like the make-it-yourself idea. i may use that myself- but do it in a crazy color-red maybe?

  22. Mommy Cracked :

Oh, wow! And for $1200? I'm seriously impressed! It looks fantastic!

  23. Petit Elefant :

Viktor is a handy guy, I have to say I'm very proud. The mirror is almost my favorite, running a close tie with the tile.

    The Jacobsen Family,

Thank you! Crazy that it took 5 years though, right? ;)

    Mommy Cracked,

$1200, I know right? That's really truly Design on a Dime. That's the best part of the whole ordeal.

  24. Erin S. :

Seriously AWESOME! You guys did a fabulous job!

  25. Petit Elefant :

    Erin S.

From you, I'll take that as a high compliment. We worked our little fannies off but I think it paid off!

  26. Robertsons :

it turned out great…i remember the before what a big change…good job!

  27. Petit Elefant :

And you didn't even see it after we gutted it all the way down to the studs. It was a whole lot of work, and crazy enough, I'm ready to start a whole new project in my bathroom. !!!
