fun birthday party ideas for kids.

My mother recently sent to me the pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey game used for several parties in our home. (I can’t believe she saved it all these years!) It has sweet vintage appeal and has me wondering: do kids still play this game? What happened to a good old fashioned birthday party? Do little girls still wear party dresses? With theme parties all the rage, is there such a thing as a birthday party themed party? Seems such a theme couldn’t be simpler. For your enjoyment, a round up of classic birthday party ideas.

blogher, boston, and beyond.

BlogHer was a huge success. News outlets all over covered the story of the SocialLuxe Lounge, which was 100% better than I even dreamed it would be, and I knew it was going to be good. I can’t give the full report since I’m in a hotel room in Boston, Massachusetts hanging with a bunch of cool bloggers for a TJ Maxx event. Full details will follow. Here’s the recap for now:

SocialLuxe at BlogHer was a {huge} success. stop.
Met Ree, aka Pioneer Woman. Lovelier even in person. stop.

Now have cankles from all the walking, running, swag stuffing. stop.

Saw kids for approximately 10 hrs. before hopping on a plane again. Trying not to dwell on that fact. stop.

Am in an amazing hotel called the Fairmont in Boston. stop.

Had dinner with some fabulous ladies. stop.

Too exhausted for more. stop.
Will report upon arrival home. full stop.

Using the Public Library

Little O is a screamer. Not because he’s sad or mad. Just because he loves to hear what his voice can do. And boy, is it powerful! It is absolutely ear-piercing. I told Mike that we won’t be taking him to any libraries soon.

But speaking of libraries, I thought today I could point you in the direction of some entertaining and enlightening blog posts about children in libraries. A close friend is a librarian and often encounters problems of mothers who feel that the library is a great big babysitter and allow their children to run wild and rampant while they tuck themselves away in a corner with a book. As a public service, I am trying to spread her message of how parents should take care of their children in libraries.

Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Los Angeles

If you ever wanted to see what it is like to live the life of the rich and/or famous without the Paparazzi and without reading about your latest exploits in the grocery checkout line go stay at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Los Angeles. Only a short sprint from downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and all points in between, the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza offers not only a central location to all points in the greater LA area, but also a view to die for.

As guest of The Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, we had the opportunity to venture into the pool and live it up, and Allison got a chance to order her signature cliche drink, a Pina Colada, poolside.

Our room and accommodations were so magnificent that we did not want to leave our room at all. With plush beds, grand bathrooms, a living area, a view to die for, and a staff that was ever so wonderful, it is no wonder why some folks simply move into this Hyatt and make it their home. We spend a wonderful evening playing games in the room with the children and the next morning we had an exquisite breakfast … >> find out more...

all modern baby + GIVEAWAY

Have you happened upon All Modern Baby yet? Allow me to introduce you. Oodles of fun, wonderful things for babies and kids in one spot. From wooden toys (you know me, you really know me) to ride-on toys to nursery bedding by all the big names, I could spend hours perusing their online boutique. If I were putting together a dream nursery right now, I’d be all over the Stokke Sleepi. I’m crazy about the oval shape, the conversion options, and you really should see the bedding sets!
And don’t even get me started on their amazing selection of great toys, so many of them unique and eco-friendly, too, with modern surprises everywhere. These wooden alphabet blocks are a favorite. Letter, numbers and patterns. Any toy that passes as a work of art is ok by me.

GIVEAWAY :
All Modern Baby is kindly offering up a complete set of these gorgeous notNeutral blocks to one very lucky petit elefant reader. I’m really wanting a set of my own–who knew developmental toys could be such eye candy? Those patterns! Those typefaces! You know you want a set too. Details for giveaway entry below!

unique screen printed clothes for kids.

This onesie may be one of the cutest thing I’ve ever put on my baby. Handmade by Kristin of v.lou textiles, the onesie itself is high quality (and bright red!) and the applique? Color coordinated perfection in uncommonly cute patterns. Not to mention it’s an elefant. oui! A retro vibe, a modern vibe, and clearly stitched with care. Very adorable by v. lou textiles.

Creator Kristin has an eye for unique graphics I haven’t seen elsewhere–we may be partial to pachyderms around here, but I love her selection of screen printed (bikes! owls!) and appliqued designs (kangaroo! quail!). Kristin even prints her own fabric and admits her love of prints, patterns and sewing borders on obsession. I’m happy about that.
lap shoulder infant t-shirt, quail, $12
summer dress, kangaroo $20
Check out v.lou on Etsy or the official website here. Kristin’s shop goes off-line weekends during the summer but returns to active status promptly Monday mornings. If you are in the Salt Lake City area, you can find her at the Salt Lake City farmers market or the Park City Sunday Market. Details on her site.
